Pregnancy & Post Partum Related Dysfunction

The body changes a lot while growing another human and problems can arise in which PT can help by looking at the musculoskeletal system as a whole. Pregnancy and post partum care is a generally underutilized area of PT. There are so many rules when you are pregnant- ie. massage therapy is contraindicated in the first trimester, certain foods must be avoided, many medications cannot be taken. This leads to a lack of guidance in how to manage pain and injury, leaving many women confused. In addition, active women who get pregnant often find minimal recommendations in how to maintain a safe and appropriate level of activity. In the post partum phase, PT can be helpful in providing education regarding body mechanics while caring for a newborn. Physical therapists can play an important role in helping women during and after pregnancy.
