Every year during the Olympics new physical therapy treatments take center stage along with the athletes themselves. A few years ago, that treatment was kinesiology tape. Now kinesiology tape or “KT Tape” is used widely in many physical therapy clinics and sporting events around the world. At Apple we often get the question what is it and what does it do?

KT tape is an elastic fabric tape that is designed to support the body without limiting movement as seen with bracing and traditional athletic tape. There are several different uses for KT tape including acute injury recovery, chronic pain relief and injury prevention. When an injury first occurs, it can be used to aid in acute injury recovery by helping with lymphatic drainage to reduce swelling and bruising. For chronic injuries we may use KT tape to allow a patient to have added support in their low back to return to work with less pain. Lastly, KT tape can be used in injury prevention to provide support to muscles by helping the muscle to not over-extend or over-contract.

Can you apply KT tape on your own?

Often as part of your physical therapy program at Apple Therapy your therapist will educate you on how to apply KT tape for your particular injury. Most KT tape techniques are very simple and easy to learn.

How often should I wear KT tape?

Initially your therapist may have you wear the tape for 4-5 days if your skin can tolerate. You can shower with the tape on but should take it off when the ends start to peel up or if your skin becomes red or itchy. Eventually you may only wear the tape during the aggravating activity such as a long run or during the work day.
